Posted By Graham T Guys, Answers on a post card please! Seriously, can anyone advise on the 'ideal' or even slightly unconventional methods of becoming a CDM-C? What would be the 'general' minimum requirements and what are the ideal? I get the distinct impression that an engineering background is expected, in which case I'm stumped. If this is the case what would be the minimum quals needed, I remember reading an HND would be suitable. Hell, any ideas on where I can take my career would be appreciated...feeling a little lost at the moment. Details are; 1. BSc Biomedical Science. 2. NEBOSH Gen Cert 3. H&S auditor (approx 1 yr) 4. 4 yr experience working for the railway. 5. Thinking of construction, oil/gas industries but appreciate that there is a lot of experienced people out there already. Just need some thoughts from some experienced folk. Thanks G

Posted By Mal Hi Graham, subject of great debate this and varying subjective viewpoints. If you look at the ACOP and appendix 5 there are three areas that are considered important. It asks for knowledge and experience in: design and construction process; health and safety in construction; relevant experience to task; So these are the three areas you need to concentrate on Graham, have a look at them and then see where your gaps are, bridge those gaps with training, reading, mentoring, shadowing, whatever it takes, then you will be in a position to say to clients and employers, look i have the knowledge and experience in the three identified areas, employ me! For me, if you have a background i construction, whatever that discipline may be, that is a great start. And out of the three areas identiifed above hte most important is the relevant experience to the task, eg; most areas of construction i deem myself to be more than competent to perform the CDMC function. However move into petrochem, or nuclear, or chemical factory etc and i have no experience in those areas and would not accept an appointment in those fields as CDMC. Best of luck Graham, Regards, Mal

Posted By Samantha Fisher Go onto the APS website (Association of Project Safety) and look at the application for membership. To become a member you have to be able to show points against the three areas. Engineering/Design qualifications, Safety qualifications, Experience. You have to have some points in all three but as far as the qualifications go you can either major on the Engineering/Design side with smaller number of points on the safety side or the other way round. If you don't have the points on the Engineering side I don't think NEBOSH general would give you enough for membership. You can always work as an Assistant CDMC to gain qualifications and experience under a more qualified person and there is such a shortage in the industry that I would suggest you apply for posts and make it clear in your application that you would like to develop your qualifications and learn on the job so to speak. Enthusiasm and ability can overcome a lot.
