Hi there:
I'm currently out of work and seriously looking for a change of career and to move into other fields of Health and Safety outside asbestos (which I have been specialising in for about 13 years).
I have the P402 asbestos surveying certificate (which I needed for asbestos) and the NEBOSH certificate. I've had the NEBOSH for about 10 years and would now like to make some use of it.(You don't need NEBOSH to work in asbestos).
I've tried all the usual routes by applying for vacancies through recruitment agencies, directly to employers like local councils, colleges, universities, construction companies, FM companies, banks, engineering companies/ manufacturers, etc, you name it. I have had some interviews, which went quite well, but there has always been someone with just that little bit more experience than me.
The feedback I've had from these organisations is that my CV is too 'riddled with asbestos'.
The last time I checked I thought asbestos regulations fall under Health and Safety Law.
What I've found that is the problem is I find it difficult to convince employers that working in the asbestos sector has certainly given me an incentive to enhance my knowledge and skills in other fields of Health and Safety. One important factor in H&S is about developing a good health and safety culture amongst a workforce and management team, who communicate with one another with ample uses of common sense. As a result I am happy to resume with any of the NEBOSH, IOSH or NVQ study programmes in the near future if necessary.
I wonder if there are any of you out there in the Midlands region (about 40 mile radius of Leicester) who is prepared to give us a chance.
Regards
Nik

Nik,
its difficult to move away from the world of asbestos consulancy. A lot of employers are put off by the fact its so specialist. I passed the Nottingham Trent Diploma in Safey Health and Environmental Management whilst working as an asbestos surveyor and had some difficulty finding work in Health and Safety. My first job was an assistant Planning Supervisor position. I gained a couple of years experience and now work as a Health and Safety Advisor/ CDMC managing my own projects.
My advice would be to look for a way in as an assistant and undertake some further study.
Hope this is of help
Malcolm
