Posted By Gina Browse Hi all, I have an upcoming interview for the position of H&S advisor for a Biomedical related employer. I have to give a 10 min presentaion entitled: "You have been asked to audit a biomedical laboratory. Please provide an outline of how you would achieve this?" Shouly I be entirely specific in relation to a lab environment or should I also include general audit stuff like horizontal/vertical/audit planning etc? I have only once done a proper audit (usually only safety inspections) so am pretty unfamiliar with it all. Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Posted By A Campbell Hi Gina, It looks like the request is asking you to outline how you would conduct (achieve) an audit? You may wish to look at different types of audits, frequency, duration, who you wish to be involved (e.g. management commitment) Typical areas you will be looking at – safe working environment, house keeping, lev – maintenance, fume cupboards? Accident reporting procedures. Procedure for accidental spillage, COSHH, containment, bio hazard waste ….. Just a few areas to consider maybe?

Posted By Jane Blunt I would also look at how you prepare the ground with the people who are to be audited - what you tell them, what your objectives are. Consider the people (and at what level of the organisation) you intend to talk to. Most auditors also ask for some paperwork prior to the actual audit, and therefore part of the audit is assessing the quality of the system, as evidenced by the paperwork. Part of the audit process is doing spot checks to see that the reality in the lab is a true reflection of the documented systems of work. Jane
