Hello everyone, hope your in a festive spirit! I often read the messages concerning offshore work with interest and find the comments very interesting. I am ex RAF, (Logistics, 23 years) and for the last 41/2 years have been employed as a H&S Advisor for a major food manufacturing company in Scotland. Like a lot of people I am desperately looking to move into subject industry. Just been advised of my Grad iosh membership level, Hold Pg Cert in Safety & Risk Management, NEBOSH Gen Cert and, completed BOSIET/Medical in August this year. I am also attending OIM Legislation Course in Jan 09, at Petrofac, Aberdeen. Spent a whole day visiting agencies in Aberdeen back in August, but no luck as yet. Would very much appreciate some constructive advice on the way forward. I have self funded my courses and prepared to continue doing so.

Should I try and start at Roustabout entry level?

My advice would be not to restrict yourself, you could try health and safety jobs in oil or oil related companies onshore first. This may not be as lucrative as offshore but you will get a foot in the door and gain experience of the industry. Also try sending your CV direct to companies as some jobs don't get as far as agencies.

Thank you Jane, appreciate your comments. I am sending my CV to a combination of onshore/offshore roles, both UK and Norway. Having just read advice by CFT on separate post concerning 'brightening up CV' it looks as though that is an area I need to work on.

Any advice on suitable further courses welcome, looking to continue with Post Grad study later in the year.

Have a great festive season.

United,

I'm in the industry myself (have had both offshore and onshore roles). Are you wanting to work offshore or onshore?

In my opinion, it would be quite difficult to get an offshore Safety Advisor's role without the relevant offshore experience.
With your experience, i'd think a role onshore is attainable (maybe with a view to going offshore?).
I have know several friends who have started as Rousties (with the NGC etc under their belts) in the hope of moving up the ranks. It takes time though and would you be prepared to be what in effect is a general Labourer?

Good luck whatever you decide!

SC,

I agree with your comment regarding offshore safety advisor role. I understand that to progress into a H&S role within industry, offshore experience is preferred by companies. Therefore, I am prepared and believe it right to start at entry level. Would prefer offshore but understand onshore may be the way forward. With a predominant previous background in logistics, material control/stores is an option that appeals to me however, I am prepared to learn the ropes so to speak, so roustie position would not put me off. I am hoping OIM legislation course in January will open a few doors.

Any advice you could give me SC would be gratefully received. Do you know a good O&G Industry CV advisor? Willing to pay for good advice/help with mine.

Regards.
