Posted By Paul T9 I have been reading some of the previous threads and am a bit concerned about the ‘experience’ part of the changing of my career. I am studying for my Nebosh Diploma and it is self funded, I know this is no guarantee. I have had my NGC for five years now and have been the paid Company Health and Safety Rep for my department (Small one 25 employees) this is extra to my primary duty. Now as the Rep. I have compiled all of the departments RA, COSHH, MHO, DSE, etc. as well as attending regular SHEF meetings. I have even been allowed to shadow along on audits (return of favour for developing an administrative database for the contract. This is not my role either just good at IT) with the managers. Is this enough, will it get me noticed? Or do I need to do more?

Posted By garyh It's a great start, depends on what job you go for. Lots of people on this forum just get a qualification eg NEBOSH Dip/Cert and wonder why they can't get a Safety job with no experience. Your approach seems to be the right one.

Posted By Raymond Rapp I agree with Gary, you have made a good start. In those areas where you may be short of experience it is worth reviewing or refreshing those areas. A prospective employer may ask you about them, no problem saying you have not had much experience in them but better to have some sort of comment rather than none. Ray

Posted By Paul T9 Thanks, It's good to known that I'm going in the right direction. The area I'm looking towards will probably be Aviation (Worked on airfields most of of my life so far, all military, as a fire fighter) or other but don't think I would be any use in construction (helping the old man on the building site wouldn't really count) or manufacturing. I have also kept up a portfolio and keeping the CPD updated with IOSH although that will only help at the interview stage. Any other advice more then welcome. Paul

Posted By Paul T9 Time to put it to the test! Applying for a Health and Safety Advisor position that is too good an opportunity to miss, even though I was going to wait until I had completed my Diploma. Also I will be attending the next branch meeting. Thanks all.

Posted By peter gotch 1 Paul I wouldn't ignore "helping the old man on building site" - guess you will have seen a few examples of how to do it, but possibly how not to do it? Not under your control so excellent opportunity to explain your understanding of site health and safety risks (and equally, opportunity to relate these to what you might envisage in the environment for which you are being interviewed) - all about showing that you can add value whatever the sector you are going for. Good luck, Peter

Posted By Paul T9 Peter, Funny you should mention that, my old man was an excellent builder but also a bit accident prone. Perhaps why I developed an interest in health and safety? Paul

Posted By Jon Fox 100 Hi Paul, Please forgive me but dont knock your military experience. Its all about putting into civilian language what you have done naturally throughout your military career. For example, I have spent 24 years in the Submarine service, and have just secured a senior health and safety position in the construction industry, because it transpires, that most people consider construction as a building site - the fact that I have dealt with Contractors, Policy, Confinded spaces, fire fighting, training, management, method statements, permits to work, hot work, risk assessments, traffic routes, people, access/egress, emergencies, first aid, etc etc in my daily job as you will have done on the airfields, should work in your favour aswell. Please feel free to eamil me and I will forward my CV/telephone you to suggest a couple of tips if required Regards Jon

Posted By Frank Macleod Paul, I would have thought you are in a good position to move your career in H&S forward as you have some excellent experience with the risk assessment preparation etc. That plus the fact you are studying for your diploma must stand you in good stead. I know a number of guys who have gained positions in the offshore oil and gas industry, simply for being ex firemen with no H & S experience or qualifications. (Not something I would or do condone). I have always wondered how the HSE would view their competence in the event of a serious incident? I should add that one that I know has turned out to be a very competant chap indeed but others that I am aware of are lacking in competence other than to service fire extinguishers or take charge of the fire team, a very small (but important) part of an offshore safety advisor's job description. Stick in there Paul, you are heading in the right direction with a good balance of competence and qualification. Regards Frank
