Posted By emma reid Hi, I have been shortlisted for a Council in Northern Ireland. The role is H,S & Emergency Planning officer. The first stage of the recruitment is a work related test which will last an hour. I would appreciate any thoughts or advice on this as to what the subject matter may be. Coming from the Private Sector I am unsure of what to expect. Thanks

Posted By steven bentham Hi Emma A long shot . . Some interviews started with a 'In-Tray Exercise'; this would be a series of problems in the forms of typical letters that you would be expected to respond to. These can be on a wide range of issues to test your knowledge and problem solving skills . . Other interviews I have attended have consisted of direct technical questions. My limited experience of interviews, is that you get more by selling yourself 110% i.e. most people are modest in their skills and achievements. Good luck

Posted By garyh In my experience you could just phone up and ask for more info; initiative is a good thing. Try and find out what competencies are expected for the role (job profile?) then look for examples where you have shown them, then be prepared for questions about them. Alternatively make sure you understand the role and can talk about it and how you would approach it.

Posted By Tuesday Hanley-Jones From experience of Local Authority & Public Sector interviews the focus of the test will be to establish problem solving ,prioritising and decision making skills. The tests can consist of a mathematical paper, written paper responding to a scenario and occasionally a presentation on a given subject lasting no more than 15 minutes where you have to identify a solution to a problem and explain the cost/benefits to a panel of 3 people who will ask questions. Some Councils also include physcometric testing. Good Luck.

Posted By Steve M Granger Hi Emma, regarding the EP bit have a look at their website under Emergency Planning and determine what they do and what their biggest problem is. They will probably brag about what they have done in this area over the last few years. Also do a read up on the Civil Contingencies Act as they have duties as a responder just as the blue light services do. Your job, should you decide to accept it, is to make sure the council staff - and public to an extent, remain safe when they initiate the emergency plan (but I am sure you wont be alone and nor will it be the first time they have to consider safety in such circumstances!) Oh yes - the day job, well that's just the same as anywhere; people + hazards = accidents Now find out what x is worth and ask them for it as salary ;) Steve
