Folks

A bit about me first.I am 48 years old and due to retire from the Police Service as an Inspector during October, 2009. I am currently studying for a BA (Hons) in Business Studies with the OU and I will graduate during October, 2010, a year after retiring from the Police. Before I joined the Police, I was an Electrical Fitter for 7 years at Rosyth Dockyard but that was 25 years ago (seems a long time ago now).

I am thinking about what I should do after retirement and I was recently on a week long course doing the basic 'Managing Safely' course which I enjoyed. I am the local safety rep for my Police Station (Nothing grand, I do the monthly walk round and report any faults that I find etc) My appetite for H & S was wetted on that course and I wondered if I could work in that field for another 10 years or so before throwing in the towel completely.

It is in my mind to take a year out after leaving the Police and complete my degree. This would also give me a year to do either the NVQ4 or Diploma in H&S. I am in two minds whether to do the Neebosh General Cerificate as well although I could just bash on for one of the others (What's the best for employers)

That's me and I am looking for guidance from you guys as to whether you think I might have a future in H&S (Would I be employable as I don't want to waste my retirement pot) and if so what courses should I take in my year out etc to prepare.

Thanks

Craig

Hi Craig,

Good luck on the 'retirement'.

Jumping from Managing Safely to Dip is a huge step, notwithstanding your OU studies. Entry requirement for the Dip course are available on the Nebosh site but are, I believe, at least Nebosh Certificate or equivalent.

If not employed in the role it would be difficult to generate the evidence required for the NVQ route.

Are the HSE recruiting in your area? as a trainee HSE Inspector they would train you, having been a warrant card holder is an advantage. Also knowledge of PACE etc for interviewing.

I would suggest looking at the Nebosh website to check entry requirements for the diploma course. The certificate is straightforward but, as you will see elsewhere onm the threads, Nebosh have a special language for questions and answers. It may also be worthwhile looking for your local IOSH meetings and trying to attend for information gathering, most are welcoming and open to potential recruits and interested parties.

You are not too old to start though, I am 48 and on the Diploma course now, having completed the Certificate last year. Employed as an advisor and coming from a uniformed (mil)background.

Good luck in your quest.

Regards,
S

Thanks for the advice. Lots to think about. Trainee H&S Inspector is worth thinking about and I would think that I have transferable skils. I am in Scotland by the way but the same will apply everywhere.

Regards

Craig
