Based on current market trends you should be aware that there are many applications for each post advertised, & it is (IMO) prudent to keep it to two pages.

The inclusion of a summary at the very beginning can be helpful, this ensures all what you want to say is included in a short paragraph that will permit the reader to 'probably,' put it to one side for a more in-depth read.

If qualification dates are recent then it can be useful to leave the actual dates out, thus not giving the reader the opportunity to dismiss the CV because they 'may' consider the qualification package to be too recent.

The inclusion of current salary can be a quick route to the bin, if your rate is quite a bit higher that what will be on offer.

But the most important aspect of a CV, istthe specific preparation to the position applied for; it simply does not work having just the one CV to cover all vacancies that you apply for; far better to make it bespoke and ensure that it fits the criteria for the actual job you are applying for.

Typed of course, and don't cram too much in by using a small font, or a 'clever' choice of script or similar, keep it simple and stick with say Aerial, TNR or similar.

Often overlooked is the cover letter; it should be to the point and really ought not include some of those 'awful' paragraphs that one sees so frequently, such as:

'I can assure you that whoever else applies for this position I will be a far better choice, so look forward to an early response confirming interview.'

Or:

'If you do not give me an interview I can assure you the loss will be yours!'

These are just two such ACTUAL examples of closing words in recent cover letters that I have read. Fortunately before they were sent!

I hope these few suggestions help? And I wish you well with your search.

I believe that the inclusion of "achievements" is a better approach than a listing of previous job responsibilities, particularly if these can be linked to the specifics of the job being applied for.

Also it is essential that you proof read and better still get someone else to critique and proof read before you send the CV and letter. Whilst we may not all be perfect spellers or use good grammar, a spelling error will jump out at anyone who is, and be a negative influence.

As CFT says, with so many applications likely for each post, the first impression is crucial and may mean the difference between the bin and being actually considered.

David is absolutely right.

Achievements are key and to my mind are essential. Your c.v. is your first opportunity to show a prospective employer what you can offer. So many c.v.'s that I see have a list of responsibilities, often cut straight from a job description. This tells an employer very little.

By listing achievements you show what impact you had and demonstrate value that you've brought to your current employer. Make achievements quantifiable, to really make an impact in the c.v.

Depending on the style of your c.v. you can list a number of key achievements somewhere near the beginning, or a few for your recent roles.

This is what employers want to see more and more and is a way of differentiating your application from the majority, who still don't list achievements. Differentiating yourself is absolutely critical in a challenging job market.

www.hsepeople.com is the first website of its kind. A Social Networking site aimed specifically at Health and Safety People in all industries world wide. In Health and Safety the sharing of Information, Lessons Learned and best practise is very important.
