Sheldon,

I am working in Qatar and was in Abu Dhai prior to that. Most compnaies employing non native personnel will outline what language the need to speak. I have found that english is widely spoken in the gulf for business and where its not spoken, business will do translations.

As for interviews, I lived in Irealnd before coing here for work, i had a number of telephone interviews before coming out for a formal meeting with employers. I would not take a position unless I had meet with the employer in person and seen the work location and how the business is set up.

If the employer is not willing to bering you over to the work location before offering you the job, I would be very concerned and would prob not take the role.

Regards
Paul

Hi Sheldon,

I would suggest that the NEBOSH diploma is sufficient for your role within the Middle East. What I have found is that a lot of the time, experience counts for more than qualifications over here. Yes, qualifications are important and will help to give you the knowledge and competence to operate as an effective H&S advisor/manager. Maybe the Bsc would benefit you slightly more as you work higher up the organisation, ie, safety director.

Hi sheldon,

I agree with Paul, I came to Qatar 12 months ago for an interview with a prospective employer, and i am glad I did, as I quickly made up my mind that they were not for me.
I am still in Qatar with another company who I also had the opportunity to meet before i commited myself.
A couple of words of advice for working in the Middle East;
Do not come with any preconceptions.
Try and find employment with a western based company.
Come with your eyes wide open!

best of luck
