Posted By Steve M Granger Michael - need to know more about you and your intended career sector, have you asked at your local Branch? Might be a better place to enquire about work shadow etc. See IOSH web for details and meetings. Steve

Posted By Anthony Edwards Claiel, That really helps the guy. If you have nothing constructive to say why bother, all you are doing is putting someone down when they are asking for advice. Michael, Unfortunately there are many safety professionals out of work due to the present climate. I would suggest firstly you establish what safety field you would like to work in. Once established contact organisations in your area stating you are looking to gain experience and wish to work as an assistant health and safety adviser for a nominal fee (or free if that is the case). All the best Tony

Posted By Swis I personally, can see a constructive side of response from Claire. I personally think this is one of the most appropriate response for this type of question. Just read the post once again. Grammar is important, especially when you are seeking a position/employment. Writing skills are equally important as is the H&S knowledge. Personally I would advise Michael to keep approaching various employers in his scope for whatever industry he can find. I disagree with fellow posters to suggest that he should choose a specific industry first. I believe that H&S experience in any industry would prove useful for his skills as well as CV. Michael - Take my word and don't adopt a narrow minded approach.

Posted By clairel I posted my reponse for two reasons:. 1) As Swis quite rightly pointed out, too many people underestimate what a poor image bad grammar and spelling make. You want to be taken seriously then write seriously. I would help anyone with their grammar if asked and more should perhaps ask; and 2) The title of the post is IMO awful. Anyone who asks me what I can do for them is going to get a short response. Maybe something like 'can you help me' would have been better thought out.' On first reading the title the first thing that actually sprang to mind was 'ask not what your country can do but what you can do for your country!' Have a think about it. As I believe that this thread is the reason I have received an offensive email I shall now duck out. The matter has been reported to the appropriate bodies (The grammar in that email was rubbish too by the way!)

Posted By A Campbell Agree with clairel on this one. When I first saw the title I thought I was back working in West Africa again! Similar was... What Have You For Me?

Posted By clairel Why was my post deleted? I didn't swear. I didn't insult. I wasn't offensive. I wasn't deliberately antagonistic. Why was my post deleted?

Posted By Lee Mac Michael Dear me, this thread has had some strange responses for a guy merely asking for assistance. I would advise you speak with/ telephone a few companies in your main field of expertise/experience. Also make contact with a few H&S consultancies and explore the opportunity of a junior role to allow you to get the experience you need. Lastly but not leastly try a few of the employment agencies out there. There are opportunities still available out there although they have reduced in numbers over the last 12 months. Do a wee search on the web there are a few websites that specialise in H&S opportunities- try googling. Good Luck Lee

Posted By IOSH Moderator And with that post, it is time to bring this thread to a close, as it has a strong tendency to disappear into the long grass. Forum Moderators
