I am based in the north west on England and willing to travel,I am Thirty yrs old and still motivated to learn.I have ten yrs experience in construction,Throughout my ten yrs i have dealt with H+S issues(Risk Ass,Safe systems of work,Permits to work etc).I have done lots of courses like H+S for site supervisors,Safety Inspection etc.

I have just completed my exams For the NGC,Passed all mocks with good marks.I have already booked to do the diploma at Bolton university, This starts in September.I am currently using my days doing volunteer work for one of my local council,With there help I have learnt alot more about the day to day works of a H+S advisor and feel confident of giving a job opportunity my full attention.

Kind regards
John

The only way forward would be keep applying for a junior roles. Also get as much H&S experience as you can. Contact local employers to do free audits etc, working volutarily for charities, local club etc for reference.

Hi Jono
Never mind the 'voluntary'thing, nobody can live on fresh air.
Keep firing out your CV and just clarify you are not looking for top dollar and you are willing to work for minimum wage.I would also concentrate on gaining experience rather than worrying about diplomas.
Good luck, something will come your way.

Hi Jono - Amyjane has maybe hit the nail on the head - get your CV checked out as a lot of them are ditched in the first few seconds of reading I believe.

I managed to get mine sorted due to some very kind people on this site - you can only but ask?

Have you thought about adding a professional trainers certificate to your list of skills. I sat the CIEH professional trainers certificate, and this definitely helped when applying for my current role.I note you are based in the northwest, and I can provide details of a local course provider who will deliver the training for £140!! Once you have acquired the certificate, you can apply to become a registered CIEH trainer, and begin to deliver their H&S courses. If you want further info, email me on apk124@live.co.uk. If you want a chat about this, include your phone no and I'll give you a call tomorrow. Hope this helps.

If you can afford it, it might be worthwhile for you to do the diploma ( together with the trainer certificate ), as this would elevate you to Grad IOSH and is a good indicator that you are committed to h & s.

It would also indicate that any prospective employers would not have to put you on any expensive h & s diploma course as well.

With regards to working on a voluntary capacity, it is very noble of you to offer your services for free, but I don't know how that would stand with regards to any liability issues.i.e The employer received advice from a competent person who was not directly employed as an employee or consultant and another employee was injured in the course of their normal work duties.

If you could get to grad iosh status with a few extra quals, then at least you have some weapons in your armoury when it comes to seeking employment.

Good Luck

Hi John

Thanks for the advise.

I Have booked to do the diploma,Self funded by myself. So if any employer offered me a position I would still pay for it.

The volunteer work is purely for experience,Some very nice people from my local council have kindly been letting me shadow them on there day to day tasks which I have found very knowledgeable.

hi,
Keep trying until you succeed. Due to the economic crisis, many jobs, especially the HSE sectors are made reduntant.
That does not mean, there are no jobs.Say ,rare specific jobs that require more qualifications & experience =(competent)
It is a matter of time....hopefully, the industry will revive safety field jobs.
Keep trying, meeting companies, organisations..... In the mean time, try upgrading your skills,be a trainer, Firefighting skill, First-Aider, other fields or hotel industry.
Best of luck. Naveen

Guess this will go down like a lead balloon - but in my humble opinion, you are starting to sound desperate/grovelling.

You need to get as much as you can in your favour. Your posts come across as mis-jointed and unprofessional.

I don't claim to be perfect at all, but grammar and presentation does matter even on a public forum.

I'm not criticising your willingness etc, but trying to give some objective feed back of how you appear to come across.

Hope you can tell the difference between criticism and objective feedback.

I don't appreciate you broadcasting your views that I am desperate on this thread, this could have been done by email.

For you to say I am desperate is unfair, these are desperate time,s.Alot of the country is either looking at redundancy or have been made redundant.Being keen and motivated is not desperate

Its ok for someone like you who seems to have got to where you wanted.I have said I am looking for an entry level position,I have not claimed I am a professional. If you want to talk about this further contact me on

Thank you for feeling the need to support.

I came onto this forum for advise and to better myself.I was made redundant from a well paid job in construction,I am willing to take an entry level job, what would proberly not be half the salary I was earning previously. If I come across desperate that is your opinion but I would say I am honest, hardworking and willing to do what it takes to get were I want to get.

Keep trying john, something will break for you.

Ignore the sceptics out there and be positive.

As I stated earlier, the fact that you are self funding the dip / training qual must put you in a good stead when the market picks up together with general construction experience.

If you do get to a couple of interviews be yourself and show that you are really keen to learn and ask questions. I adopted this approach 10 years ago and it paid off for me - I had to beat about 100 inquiries to the post as a Planning Supervisor / assistant health and safety consultant in a high profile property consultancy in Central Glasgow and I was lucky to get it. I got the most out of this job at the time and moved on to bigger and better things during the boom times.

Keep Trying

Jono, Hi, I appreciate your determination, enthusiasm, courage & efforts put in getting a job.Best of luck.
However, suggest to communicate effectively, one can improve....Just for example,a year ago,I saw a movie "SECRET" ,it inspired me , I communicated with myself & others, prepared my updated CV, Searched the Market, met people in the industry, Did research of jobs,as then it was a boom in the construction industry, found a suitable opening and resigned the job and it took some few months, I got H&S Manager job in Gulf.
What I wish to share with you is , Do your best,be motivated and have the patience
There is a saying,"Where there is a Will, there is a WAY".Keep trying..
You will reach to your Goal.

Part of personnel development is the ability to reflect on what you could do better and to consider the advice of others.

If I were you I would change your screen name to a real full name.

Post a clear indication of your experience
Your aims and ambitions
Your salary expectations - precise figure not required.
Your location/area willing to work
Your qualifications 9general) and with respect to h&s

Make sure it is grammatically correct as well

As previous, I admire your constant posting and eagerness to get into h&s.

As others say its a very competitive job market at the moment - people with diplomas are finding it difficult to get work at the moment, leave alone those with no/limited h&s experience and qualifications.

I'm sorry you choose not to recognise the difference between personal criticism and objective feed back - I assure you there is a world of difference.

You will get a break eventually, but you do have to do as much as you can to influence recruiters to look at you. Presenting a professional image when posting on this forum is one of those things to help.

At the moment in my opinion your posting comes across as some who has been made redundant, obviously needs a new employment - 'so lets try h&s'approach.

And yes I do understand redundancy

I was made redundant in June and secured a new job within a week, slight pay cut but nevertheless a job.

But admittedly I do have quite reasonable qualifications and experience in high risk safety and very transferrable skills to other sectors.

I wish you luck and hope you can take the advice in the spirit it is intended.

There are jobs out here

You seem passionate about the career you now want to pursue - not desperate...keep us informed on how you do and if anything comes up this end I'll keep you posted. Stick at it.

Goodluck mate.
