Not sure if this should be a new thread, springs from the "is the certificate now redundant" debate, if so excuse the newbie. I completed an M.Sc. in quality management a couple of years ago. Due to personal circumstances did not focus on career change at that time. (was and still am working in social care) Am now considering doing the NGC.
Other things to consider age-48, current income- C£30k, dependents - yes, Mortgage - yes.

Should I be taking advantage of the current recession and getting prepared for the brave new dawn.....or ...stopping dreaming/eying up the neighbors grass and be thankful I've got a job that should be reasonably secure till I start to collect my (final salary) pension.

Hi, Your topic is interesting...& an ongoing issue of HSE job market. It is never too late to study, improve oneself, upgrade ones skills or rather say, multiskilled. So that one can earn more, more satisfaction, more, more of everything with motivation ...etc.
Seeing the recent downtrend in jobs due to many factors .i.e. Economic recession, automation,IT computerisation, change of technology..etc.Demand & supply, lack of resources, cheaper labour available in EAST (China,..)
The best is to continue with your present job/task.Knowing e.g.you have another 12 to 17years to work before retirement, depending upon your needs, you have to plan how to utilise your remaining job-time to achieve your set goals And to have a comfortable life, assessing your Health conditions, family commitments & others
Even doing some teachers training in HSE will be an advantage(Rospa) ,as you have already done MSc, and being experienced,it will be a good idea.
Best of luck, go ahead ...regards ,Naveen

Thanks Naveen, am assuming this would entail doing at least NGC possibly followed up by some specific training for trainers.
Will probably have a bash at the NGC on my own. Have downloaded syllabus and couple of past papers, most of the terminology and concepts seem fairly familiar from TQM, and have some exposure to legislation due to current role.
Would be very keen to speak to anyone in central belt Scotland who would be able to offer some "work experience" (fairly time limited obviously if doing cert, working & etc.) especially if this included brushing up TQM skills/knowledge.
