Posted By Foxy125 Hi, I am currently working as a Health & Safety assessor for work experience organiser. I assess workplaces on behalf of schools to ensure the placement is safe for school children to attend for their work experience. I have an IOSH certificate but would now like to progress my career and start an IOSH or NEBOSH course to enable me to get into another h&s role. I was thinking of doing the NEBOSH General Certificate but I'm not sure if this is the best one? Is this course too general? Do I need to specialise? Is my previous experience relevant enough for future positions?

Posted By Stuart Hamilton Hi
I hope the following may help you decide what to do next. I offer this advice from a background of having carried out and managed work experience H&S assessments.
The advantage you now have over many potential recruits to our profession is that you have seen many different work environments and no doubt been in a position where you have had to research and understand the operational aspect of the businesses concerned. This gives you an ability to offer solutions to many problems based on your various observations to date. Having said that potential employers will be keen to see a depth of experience as well. So that I guess is what you are hoping to achieve combined with a more recognisable qualification.
In my opinion, and it is only my opinion, the NEBOSH certificate is a strong foundation on which to base the academic aspect of your career. After that, there are many routes and my views on the next step would undoubtedly result in a debate that would detract from the point in hand.
The NEBOSH certificate can be obtained through a number of different providers and formats. If I assume that you are paying for it and are not getting time off to attend, then your options become restricted, however some local colleges may well provide evening classes and reasonable cost. 2 week intensive courses are available from commercial organisations but in the main are expensive.
I would not suggest specialisation at this stage, unless you have a particular desire to do so and can see a specific career path ahead of you. I would guess that a large majority of IOSH members have the NEBOSH certificate and only chose to specialise after that (if at all)
Given the work you are doing , I would guess there is an association with a local authority, if you are looking to develop a career within the local authority sector then NEBOSH certificate is the start, followed by a diploma level qualification (often now degrees are available with the nebosh cert being the entry requirement).
Anyway, hope it all helps in some way and please feel free to seek clarification on any career questions you may have (I may not have the answer, but there will be someone on this forum that does).

Posted By Mark Fox Hi Stuart,
Thank you for your response. I'm glad my present experience will help, although as you say the assessments I perform aren't that in depth. I think the NEBOSH NGC sounds like the best starting place.
Thanks again
Mark
