Posted By Struan Hi All
really need your help ,I have just finished a Masters degree in Environmental Health and looking to specialise in Health and Safety.
I am a mature graduate with alot of experience in the workplace however do not currently work in the Health and Safety field however have had 2 months work experience with local authorities completing health and safety inspections.
I am willing to relocate pretty much anywhere for the position
Any help and advice would be appreciated
regards

Its difficult to get into H & S right now due to current credit crisis.
You could try to contact housing associations or contractors who specialise in social housing work if they are looking for health and safety advisers.
Do you think it be worthwhile doing a nebosh cert or construction cert in addition to your MSc as these certificates have more of an emphasis on offering advice rather than enforcement of h & s as a h & s advisor to an organisation.

Posted By Struan Thanks John
well as described in my second posting the information learned on my Msc is already equivalent to Diploma level so there is no real benefit from doing a certificate

Hi Struan
The reason for my response is that I too have a degree in EH but got no where fast with it.
Only when I started to do NEBOSH Quals, I stated to get h & s interviews.
I personally found doing NEBOSH Quals equips you with offering advice rather than enforcement of h & s legislation that the EH degree gives.
Good Luck in your search.

Posted By Struan Thanks John
yes i was thinking of that aspect because all employers seem to be aware of NEBOSH as the standard however very few employers understand how much health and safety is covered on a Environmental Health degree or Msc so I guess the question to myself is do i engage in completing Nebosh quals or do i try and convince prospective employers that what I have learned is suitable and justified already
food for thought me thinks !!!
Thanks for your reply John

Hi All
just to keep you updated having spoke to the membership departmentin (IOSH) ,given the level and amount of health and safety subject matter covered on the Masters degree in Environmental Health it is on a level with Grad (IOSH)for those not familiar with Environmental Health subject matter.
Thanks again for your help and advice

Hi All
Thankyou to those who have replied particularly John and to those who have read the threads.
I know its a difficult time for everyone looking for work let alone someone with little experience but all it takes is one of the many employers who look on here to give someone a chance so that they can build some more experience.
I know there are some visionary managers out there willing to give newbies in the field a chance to gain there first position in Health and Safety.
regards

Posted By Edward Braisher I left Environmental Health a year ago, having worked in H&S enforcement for over three years and then moved over to the advisory side Good starting point for EH H&S jobs is Environmental Health news as well as their dedicated website, I think www.ehn-jobs.com. Not easy to get dedicated H&S jobs as they tend to look at it as a commercial role, i.e. Food and H&S but wish you all the best If I can be of any further assistance, please get in touch Edward

Posted By Struan Hi Edward
Thanks for your reply
I look every day at EH News but primarily they are roles in local authority. The health and Safety roles like you quite rightly said are for tied roles with food safety and are asking for some years experience and EHORB registration.
I would really like to gain some experience with a company or organisation ,currently I am employed in the Insurance Industry as a sales executive because I took the role as a way of giving me time to studying my Masters Degree in EH,before that I was a retail store manager for many years. As a way of gaining more H&S experience I have enroled to be a Health and Safety Representative at my current workplace on a voluntary basis as I think I need to develop my profile in this field. I will also soon be applying for IOSH membership and have been advised by IOSH I would be at GRAD(IOSH)level so i will look forward to applying once my certificates come through. Thanks for your reply Edward all information gratefully recieved and if you have any further ideas or suggestions please give us a ring on 07891837013
regards
