Hi, I'm about to enbark on a career in Korea (pardon the pun) and was wondering if there are many IOSH members based out there? If so how are you finding it, workwise and socially?

I'm not sure that there are how many IOSH members in Korea.
I don't think there are many members of IOSH.
Can you tell me what kind of field do you want to get a job in Korea?

Posted By gavin Andy, I worked in South Korea (based in Seoul but covering Seoul - Pusan) during 1999/2000. I went back there briefly in early 2007. It's not everyone's cup of tea, many foreigners loathe it, but I personally had a great time there. Very challenging professionally, but a great country to live and travel in. History and culture abound. Be aware that it is still officially at war with North Korea and there were around 37,500 US Troops still stationed there last time I visited. I go to South Korea for a week every 6 months to audit a paper coating plant in Ansan. I am in Korea to the moment. If you go to the KOSHA website you can download the H&S legislation in English. It is very prescriptive, without risk assessment. I think it is derived from American H&S law. What I initially did when I first visited the factory 4 years ago was to undertake a GAP analysis against Korean and English legislation. Where I felt there was a significant gap I set action plans in place to improve the situation. I believe that following the improvements on items such as machine guarding and electrical systems the site is as safe as our UK factory. I am currently teaching the management team in Korea behavioural safety and how to undertake observation audits focusing on positive reinforcement.
