Hi everyone looking for some career advice. Right now I am currently stuck in a rut with my present job. Over the last several years I have gained qualifications that have allowed me to get achieve chartered memembership. As I look for jobs I feel I either do not have the wished qualifications or enough expericene. My qaulifications are NEBOSH CERT, TUC Certificate in Safety and Health and Pg Cert in Risk Safety Management. My current job is a coaterman and H&S Team Leader in manufacturing for 3M, this has been my role for the last 14 years. I am looking for advice that will help me get to the next level? what route to take? or what other qualifications to take? Any advice would be welcome
Yours David

David,

It sounds like you are headed in the right direction, but you need to get out there with your CV.

Apply for some jobs that fit your requirements, and get their feedback.

Whilst you already have some good quals, I would always suggest pushing higher and harder - some sort of H&S diploma or MSc.

David,

I am in the same boat as yourself and i believe getting a higher qualification is the way ahead in this present climate. I have just attended an interview where a Gen Cert was required, however I was sitting with 2 others with Diplomas - I didn't get the job. Also you may find it harder if you only have a cert unless you can prove CPD and an active roll in H&S. I intend to either do the diploma, but its very expensive and/or look in the environmental area.

All the best on your job hunting.

I think some of the posters above have missed your CMIOSH status and the PGc which I assume is the same level as the NEBOSH diploma or you would not be CMIOSH.

As such I would be looking at more sector specific training, so you need to look at what area you are wanting to move into or areas where you are missing experience. When I did my PGc I was more familiar with Warehousing and retail, so as part of my CPD i have looked for courses/training in other areas such as CDM that I was less confident.

The other area you might like to consider is training. A recognised trainers certificate (city & guilds, CIEH etc) may be useful.

Good luck Brian

If you meet most of the criteria and only lack some of the desirable qualifications it may still be worth submitting your CV anyway!

In my experience, if the right person walks through the door, but they lack some of the qualifications, an employer can provide any additional training that may be deemed necessary in order for that individual to achieve the desired skill. It is much more difficult to change someones personality or to teach something like management experience (which will only come with time and practice)!

Best of luck,

Jodie

I live just outside Paisley (5mins from Glasgow Airport), thanks for all your feed back. I will start to get my Cv out there and hopefully I have enough for an employer to take a chance on me. Higher education is something Im always looking at, but as was mentioned it can be very expensive.
Cheers David
