Posted By Ice Maiden I've just received my results for NEBOSH General Certificate and I'm unsure what to do next. I did pass but I'm disappointed with that and hoped for at least a credit. I know if I resit NGC1 I will probably get a credit but is it worth it? So far this year I have done a total of 9 qualifications at 3 different establishments, including 2 OU courses. I managed to pass them all so I now have a good CV; and I have a place on the NEBOSH Diploma for Septmeber. I had to do it this way due to a change of personal circumstances and the need for an up to date CV to get back into work. Health and Safety is new to me and a field I hope to work in.
What I'm wondering is this. Do employers ever ask the grade of a qualification or simply if you have it or not; and based on everything I've written is it worth resitting NGC1 or just be happy I've passed and move on to the Diploma? Any advice would be gratefully received.
Thank you in advance.
Gillian

Posted By S W Congratulations on passing
Personally I wouldn't bother trying to get a higher pass grade.
Just my opinion and I haven't been asked the grade by prospective Employers either

Posted By Pete48 Congratulations. I would focus on the future, you have passed the benchmark and that is all most employers would be interested to know at NGC level. You will have enough to think about in studying for your Diploma. Check out why you didn't get the result you expected and use any lesson to make sure you do well in your Diploma.

Posted By Blue IM - I would forget the resit. People always think they done better than they were marked both in the Cert and also in the Diploma which is marked very strictly. As an employer of HSE persons, only the qualification itself will get an interview (dont even mention the grade on your CV). At the interview you can mention this if you like, but competence is what employers desperately look for which is required by law anyway. Interviewees who are a shivering wreck will have no chance, but for those who are calm and relaxed they will look confident and able. The employer will judge competence at the interview itself and will see if that person would fit in to their organisation.
As for the Diploma, my advice would be to go with a really good provider. Shop around and ask for examples of their material. If you just got a pass with your Cert provider - their material, study support, handouts, etc may not be working for you. Be aware that the "Diploma" is set at Honours Degree level and is a mammoth step up.
Best of luck, Blue

Posted By Ice Maiden Thank you for the responses. My gut feeling was to accept that I'd passed and move on. I actually did NGC on a fast track course which wasn't very well organised, we had 2 tutors overall, neither of which knew each other or communicated and I do feel a lot of information was missing. I've got a new provider for the Diploma, a college place which I was lucky enough to get funding for. I'm starting that in September so my focus will be on doing well in that instead of fretting over getting a couple more marks in the NGC!

Posted By Luke. I passed with a credit, annoyed i miss the distinction and thought about having it remarked.. but my tutor (who is great by the way!) just said the following to me:
"A pass is a pass"...
So you passed, you didn't fail. I have never had anyone actually ask me if i have a distinction or a credit or a pass etc... All they want to know is you have it and a desire to do good work.

Posted By Graham Baines Hi Ice Maiden, does your diploma course run over 2 years? Are you currently employed? If not will your course affect you getting a job? I'm only asking because i'm in the same boat if you check my thread you'll see what I'm talking about. Hope all goes well on the diploma. Graham Baines

Posted By Larry I agree with the above posts.
If you are doing the NEBOSH Diploma that's a massive step up to a level 6 qualification. The NGC is set at level 3, so I fail to see the point in wasting time improving on that qualification.
I see peoples CV's day in day out. Some state that they have the NEBOSH Diploma AND NGC. Why? As far as I am concerned, if you have the NEBOSH Diploma then the NGC is pretty much irrelevant.
HOWEVER coma. IMO, there is one/two exception(s) to the above. If you go on to do the construction certificate and/or fire management certificate, then you need a NGC1 pass to get the full parchment.
In that case you may find that your original NGC1 score (gained within 5 years) holds you back from getting a credit or distinction in either of those two qualifications.
Now, if you pass the Diploma, then you can use your Diploma "A" paper pass (within 5 years) in lue of your NGC1 score, putting that towards the construction or fire certificates. If you do that NEBOSH will only give you (credit you) with a basic pass mark of 48 (or there abouts). So sometimes it's not the best option and again it could hold you back.
In that case I would then consider a resit of the NGC1 in the distant future to improve the fire or construction scores, but only after focusing on the Diploma.
