Hi my name is Graham Baines, I've been a health and safety rep for the the last 4 years but the last 2 years were more like an advisor's roll, visiting sites throughout the country doing safe walks, talks and observations.
I have recently been made redundant and wish to change my career path from a production operator to health and safety advisor full time.I have achieved a distinction in my NEBOSH Certificate which has given me the drive to pursue a career in health and safety.
Right that's my background here is my question.
Which training avenue should i take? when i look at the jobs online the majority of them you need a NEBOSH Diploma, so I'm thinking this is the route to go. But do i do it distance/E- Learning or college. Middlesbrough college do a course on a Thursday from 2pm - 9pm, but who would take me on if I'm at college every Thursday? I've heard the distance learning courses have low pass rates (is this right?). The other way to go would be to do more certificate training in fire, construction or the environment.
I would really appreciate it if someone could help me or give me some sound advice on which training i should do.
Also does anyone know of any health and safety agency's in the North East so i can register my CV with them.

Dunno about the rest of your question, but if I were an employer I would not hold it against you if you stated that you were already doing what is a half day release to get yer diploma.
I got my first H/S job whilst doing the Diploma (half way through). The employer was really tight fisted and considered the fact that he didn't have to pay for my Diploma as a major advantage.
My advise is. Only my opinion mind.
1. H/S Dip first, avoiding distance learning.
2. Environmental Dip next. After doing H/S Diploma it will be easier(ish), so don't waste time on a EMS Certificate.
3. Then go for something like the NEBOSH Fire Certificate.
Bad news is that it will cost.

Another option is that rather than get tied up with attending college every week, you could also do the NEBOSH Dip distance learning.
Distance Learning is cheaper and you don't have to attend college ( except to do the exams ). A potential employer may allow you to attend college if you will be part of a department, but if you are going to be the sole advisor then it is unlikely ( in my experience ) that they will allow you to attend college every week ( even though you are self funding ). Their reasoning behind this, is that how can they contact you if you are at college and / or sitting exams and something happens which requires your input.
I did the NEBOSH Dip distance learning and took holidays off to sit exams / revision etc, so if something did happen I was on a official holiday and someone else in the dept dealt with the issue.
Distance learning is tough, but allows you flexibility in job hunting in my opinion.
However you will need to be in employment to do the project in the diploma.
