Hi All,
I'm looking at getting into the murky realms of Health and Safety i've just sat the general cert (awaiting results) i'm going on the fire cert in october then the construction cert in january. I'm all to aware that there are alot of people out there desperate to get jobs in h&s, as many experienced and very well qualified people are out of work at the moment but I just want any suggestions/pointers on how I can start to build up experience with a view to (eventually) getting a job in h&s. Any help would be greatly recieved.

Voluntary work....start knocking on doors, plenty companies happy to take on free labour ot there.

Sounds like a good start working around the 'certificates'; you should plan to progress to a safety diploma as well.
The other tactic is to get some safety topics on route: asbestos surveyor? [The certificates are all well and good but what can you actually do!]
Work-wise, why not try the voluntary sector, small construction firms or local authorities advertising in the safety practitioner.
Make contact with your local IOSH Branch, make contacts etc.

The General Cert to quote NEBOSH "Managers, supervisors and staff from all types of organisations who need a broad understanding of health and safety issues. The certificate helps them manage risks effectively. Many people take the NEBOSH National General Certificate as a first step in a career in health and safety. It provides a valuable overview, and is a sound basis for further professional study."
Note, cert level alone is not intended to be the sole qualification of safety professionals, but suitable for managers and supervisors etc.
My advice would be to get a job such as managing or supervising which has safety as part of it's remit (they all should have!). Make a good job of this, and either gradually morph your job into H&S or leave for a H&S job.
The chances of getting a safety job with just certificate level qualifications without solid experience is small.
I am being constructive here. I teach people who think that getting a NEBOSH cert transforms them into a professional - as NEBOSH state, it's a stepping stone.
