Posted By michael latchford I have recently passed the Nebosh general cert (credit).I also hold CSCS,PASMA and CLAIT for computers. I have recently re-taken English and maths at level 2 and passed.
I have experience in the building industry both new build and refurbs. I am a qualified chef with 706/1 706/2 and a nutrition and hygiene cert. I would like to move my career in the way of H&S and would value your views on how to gain my first role or position in the H&S sector. I live in the nw area and hold a full driving licence.

Michael, the first step is difficult, but stick at it, it pays off eventually. There are a number of routes, the important thing is to be able to offer a full range of H&S skills(think HSG65) that will help secure future employment:
1. Do H&S in the job you are already in, so if you are working for a hotel doing catering, offer to help out with H&S etc. Eventually you can build up a portfolio of skills that will help secure something else.
2. If you dont have the opportunity to 'bend' your current job, think about doing it for free. Your local council will have a 'voluntary team' and details of local charities that need assistance, not all charities need people for shops or collecting money, often they need help with essential skills that they cant afford to buy in, like H&S. It may go against the grain to work for free, but the reward is building up a saleable skill set.
3. Securing a job without quals and experience is difficult, but possible, just be prepared to be flexible.
Good luck
Jez
