Posted By David Hallam Has anyone got any information regarding Laptops used at home for company work. Our reps are being asked to switch them on at night to download information overnight. We have installed a phone line and the company pays the bill to that line. Some of the reps say they do not leave electrical items on at night how what would happen if it caused a fire? Some say that legislation states they do not have to comply. Any help out there with this matter.

Posted By Bob Howden From a common sense point of view I think their point on leaving electrical items on overnight is a bit spurious. I presume that they do not own either a fridge or a freezer. That they always turn their televisions, video recorders, digital boxes, etc off at the wall every night. That they never leave their own PCs on standby. That they have never used a timer switch to do their tumble drying overnight on the cheap night rate. That they turn off their microwave ovens and electric ovens at the wall every night. That they do not have any security lights on their houses or burglar alarms, etc , etc. Regards Bob Howden

Posted By Frank Neville Johnson David If you have determined that your employees are working or will work at home, then the Fire Precautions (Workplace) Regulations 1999 apply. A risk assessment will be required. It may be a simple solution requiring nothing more than a domestic type smoke alarm to BS5466. Frank
