Hello,
I am currently putting together a training package on Fire Awareness and I know that Fire Extinguishers, once activated will release the contents for a certain amount of time and that, this time is very short. I should be very grateful if anyone could tell me the running times of the different fire extinguisher or point me in the right direction to obtain these. I have tried the FIRENET, but have come up blank.
Regards,
Jayne Freeman

Jayne,
Have a look on the web for a firm called Firemark who manufacture extinguishers. Their site includes data sheets and the info you want is there. The address is www.firemarkext.co.uk
Hope this helps,

Hi Jayne
Fire extinguishers don’t last all that long in fact only seconds. For example a 9 litre water would only last about 6 seconds, a 2kg ABC dry powder only lasts about the same. Obviously how long it takes to discharge them depend upon their size.
I also think it worthwhile bringing out in training sessions how close you need to be to a fire for the extinguisher to be effective. Generally their throw is about 3 – 6 metre, but again this depends upon type.
Hope this is useful

As a trader I have a lot of technical data on a range of portable fire extinguishers from a variety of manufacturers. A few commonly used extinguishers and their discharge times are as follows:
Water 9 ltr stored pressure - 60 secs.
AFFF (foam) 6 ltr s/p - 36 secs.
Co2 2kg - 8 secs.
Powder s/p 6 kg - 16 secs.
The times for water and foam are quite long and can seem very long when not used in an emergency, but the performance does reduce as the contents empties. Some manufacturers quote minimum times which may be only 12 secs for water 9lt which may account for differing answers to your question.
