I need to measure operators exposure to vibration from orbital sanders.
Manufacturer's figures for the tools are only of use when the tool is new. As soon as it has been in use for a few weeks it will have worn a little and the vibration characteristics will be different.
Does anybody out there have any actual experience of this type of measurement? If so could you help me with the following info?
How did you do it?
What format did you use for presentation of the results?
Did your results show any appreciable problems for the operators?
Thanks in anticipation,
Bob Randall

You are quite correct in what you say about vibration levels increasing as tools wear, but what you should also be aware of is that some manufacturers of rotating and percussive tools base the declared vibration measurement for their products on laboratory simulation and not field trials. Of course, this gives totally unrealistic low vibration figures which cannot be achieved in use.
Vibration measurement is an activity that requires expensive specialist equipment. The way I see it you have two choices. Either go on a vibration management and maesurement course to learn the practical techniques and be prepared to purchase the equipment required, or hire in vibration specialists who will carry out your testing for a fee.
A company called Industrial Noise and Vibration Centre Ltd run an excellent two day vibration management and measurement course that is accredited by IOSH. Their telephone number is 01753 698800

Hi Dennis,
Many thanks for your response. I wasn't aware of the situation with laboratory simulations and this makes the problem of the Manufacturer's figures worse.
I have decided to hire in a specialist on this occasion but may decide to take the course at some later stage.
Once again many thanks.
