Can anyone advise me on what standard of training is required for operators of cherry pickers and other similar access equipment. Is there an industry standard that we should be looking for and, if so, who would be the best people to provide this.

Ian, The internationally recognised standard is the IPAF standard (International Powered Access Federation).

HELA have a circular available on the internet regarding MOBILE ELEVATING WORK PLATFORMS it is available at:
http://www.hse.gov.uk/lau/lacs/1-6.htm
There are many numbers of providers for this type of training, just do a google search.
