Posted By Don Mason Hi, My Authority is Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council with some 14,000 plus employees. I am having difficulty in comparing incident figures with other employers. In particular, other Local Authorities, Public Utilities and Health Care Trusts. I am particularly interested in the following basic figures for the year 1st April 2001 to 31st March 2002 and am seeking others who are willing to share the information when it is collated. (Total figures for the Authority/Trust/Utility): 1. Incident Rate (incidents per 1000 employees) for RIDDOR reportable incidents. 2. Same incident rate for non-reportable injury incidents. 3. Same incident rate for incidents of violence. My figures so far from 1st April 2001 to 31st December 2001 are: 1. RIDDOR Incident Rate = 8.36 2. Non-reportable injury rate = 45.14 3. Violence rate = 43.93.... I will make the figures available for the full year after 31st March to anyone able and willing to share. Look forward to hearing from you. Don Mason ~~~~

Posted By Zyggy Turek Don, I currently chair the Greater Manchester & Districts Safety Managers Group which represents 14 L.A.'s.Over the past year or so we have started to put together some benchmarks so that we can try & compare like with like. One of these relates to accident stats & I will raise your request at next weeks meeting. The first two figures should be fairly easy to provide, but any "violence" figures have to be treated carefully as the criteria for what constitutes violence can vary greatly, i.e. do you include verbal violence, how robust is your reporting procedure? etc. Zyggy.

Posted By Don Mason ZYggy, Many thanks. We have a West Midlands Safety group who all agreed to share but it hasn't really come about yet. Agree with you on the concerns over violence. We encourage all staff to report all cases from verbal abuse to actual physical violence but, many do not of course. We have a very robust system with regard to RIDDOR and minor injuries but not so sure about the violence due to under-reporting. Look forward to sharing with the Greater Manchester & District Group. I will try to pursuade our group to share also. Don ~~~~

Posted By Paul Craythorne Don, I would have thought that the West Midlands Safety Council would have had this sorted by now. Tell Solihull to get their act together and give you some figures. Regards, Paul Craythorne Formerley Health & Safety Officer - Solihull MBC (1991 -1995) and Secretary of West Midlands Safety Officers Group. How are Alison and Liz at Walsall? Are they still there?
