Posted By Karen Newman We are currently drafting advice to schools and other establishments with vulnerable clients about the fitting of finger guards to doors. There are a number of retro fit products around, does anyone have direct experience of them and which if any is best? Also does anyone have a specific policy or guidance they have issued on this subject they could share with me?

Posted By Zoe Barnett Hi Karen We've recently had a spate of fingers-in-doors in our schools, and the HSE asked what our response had been. They were satisfied with a letter we'd sent to schools reminding them of the need for risk assessment, supervision, and where necessary finger guards, although they did ask that we sent out some more guidance on the kind of thing that assessments should include. If you want to drop me your contact details I can put you in touch with a school that's installed some very expensive (but attractive) guards for their opinion on how effective they've been. Having said all that, one of the nastiest injuries reported to us was sustained by a little girl who caught her thumb in the latch side of the door, and two of the others were in secondary schools, so you'll never completely remove the risk. Hope this helps, regards, Zoe

Posted By Lance Morgan Hi The school at which I am a Parent Governor also had a spate of finger trapping incidents. The answer here is risk assessment and you will need to take into account various factors such as frequency of access, type of doors-double or single, dampers if fitted, reception and junior classes most at risk etc. In the end we retro fitted finger guards on doors we considered most likely to cause problems or which had caused problems ie. double main doors and reception area, reception classrooms and the HSE were quite satisfied with this. This was very effective and we have not had a single incident since (to my knowledge). I do not know the manufacturers off the top of my head but there are a number of types available. If you are interested I could find out for you. Hope this helpful. Lance

Posted By Ken Taylor Hello again Karen, There are some good and some rather poor ones around. Self-adhesive that fall off, folded plastic that splits, etc. Talk to Carol Ainge of Kidrapt on http://www.childsafety.co.uk/. She is very helpful and has a range of child safety products. Ken
