Posted By M Wilson Does anyone know the correct method for dealing with asbestos samples with regards to getting them to a laboratory. I have heard of people double bagging samples then sending them through the post. I am slightly concened by this method i.e. in the event of a breakage. Basically what are the safe and legally correct options for transporting small amounts of asbestos samples safely from site to a laboratory aside from delivering them in person?

Posted By Maggie Atterbury The analysts that we use - Bristol Scientific Services - always collect their own samples, for two reasons. 1 They have suitable protective clothing and understand all necessary precautions, and we would not expose our staff unduely to asbestos. 2 Adequate and suitable sampling is necessary for a meaningful result.

Posted By Frank Cooper I agree with Maggie. Try to use a lab. that is prepared to come and take the samples themselves. If you are going to take samples in-house make sure your people know how to do it safely. Then you should ask your lab. how they would like them packaged. Over the years I have seen many different containers used for samples, from plastic 35mm film canisters to tobacco tins! None of these really inspire me. I consider the taking of asbestos samples to be a specialised task and a lot of companies that deal with this usually have a mobile lab. that can analyse samples on site. Hope this helps, Frank Cooper
