Posted By Clive Richardson I have been asked a question regarding the securing of loads onto articulated trailers and lorries. Certain loads that are on open trailers are secured with netting. To position the netting effectively, the driver has to climb onto the trailer and roll the netting out over the load (this procedure is reversed when unloading). The driver at this point can be over 2 metres from the ground. The workplace regs. (reg 13) mention 'falling a distance likely to cause injury'. Loading bays are not always an option because unloading can occur on construction sites where this facility is not available. Any advice or opinions would be warmly welcomed on this topic. Thanks Clive

Posted By Steve Appleton Hi Clive, The duty under Regulation 13(1) is as far as reasonably practicable, so I would suggest you start with a risk assesment. As well as falling a substantial distance you may need to consider tripping / slipping on the trailer itself, or perhaps the driver needs to clamber over the load, which may present another hazard. The manual handling of the netting itself may also be an issue, as could variables such as weather, light levels & if the trailer is parked on level ground or not.

Posted By Robert Thomas Clive If you haven't already done so, have a look at 'Transport LAC No. 85/9 - Work at height on car transporters' for some good general advice on working atop parked vehicles. Regards Rob
