As a large chemical site with exstensive flammable hazards we restrict smoking (along with other sources of ignition)and ban our employees and contractors from bringing matches and lighters to work. Instead, we provide boxes of matches in the approved smoking areas. To be more cost effective and safer I would like to replace the boxes of matches with some fixed cigarette lighting sources. Searchs so far have failed to find anything. Although on other sites I have seen a glowing gauze shielded with a retractable cup within a wall attachment. Can anyone suggest a likley manufacturer or althernative?

I've got a feeling the socket I use to charge my mobile phone in my car can be used for this purpose.

Like Brian, I would suggest the most cost effective solution would be wiring up a car lighter to a 12 v supply. Any competent electrician should be able to manage this

Julian,
The Ciglow wall lighter manufactured by Hammond Industrial Services UK should fit the bill.
Sorry I don't know the address or phone number.
This is a custom built piece of equipment that is used on a number of offshore oil and gas platforms where the use of matches needs to be controlled.
Regards
John

Safety's first obligation is to reduce the cause of hazards at source if possible.
1) start a programme to get your staff to give up
2) get the employer to offer full support for (1) above.
3) using matches, which could be removed (albeit on pain of being disciplined or sacked) is poor. As you say a fixed device is best.
4) I agree with the car ciggy lighter approach, provided it is ecured and no one nicks it all the time.
5) what about a gas lighter, secured in a large (so cannot be concealed about the person or in a pocket) block, but removable for filling, afixed to a chain of suitable strength. Cheap and will do the job.
