We intend to build a platform in a training area for working at height. I have the spec for edge protection with regard to distances between rails, toeboard etc, but am seeking information with regard to spec for strength, i.e. how much lateral force should the top rail be required to withstand (as in impact of a body) and how would this be ascertained? Calulation of weld strength? Physical test?

Not having the relevant standards in front of me, I'm going from memory which is always a bad idea! I would suggest in the absence of a specific BSI perfomance requirement that if you really want to measure this you could use the US (ANSI) standard which is 5000lbs or metric equivalent. The main thing is whether it does the job or not, and sensible construction allied with right components (i.e. not a bit of 2 x 2) will be the 'right' answer.
Hope this helps.
