Posted By peter gotch Paul Am assuming you are not worried about hydrogen or a mining application. First you need to assess the likelihood of an explosive atmosphere and work out which areas are Zone 0, 1, 2 or unclassified. Protection required varies according to zoning, and in general is cheaper for Zone 2. Pyroban Ltd (www.pyroban.com) supply equipment to achieve Zone 2 standard on eg fork trucks. See BS5345 Part 4 adn BS EN 60079-14 Regards, Peter

Posted By Jay Joshi Suppliers will generally supply certification demonstrating that flame and spark arresters have been tested against recognised standards. BS 7244: 1990 SPECIFICATION FOR FLAME ARRESTERS FOR GENERAL USE US Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) recommended practice: SPARK ARRESTER TEST PROCEDURE FOR LARGE SIZE ENGINES SAE J 342 November 1980 SPARK ARRESTER TEST PROCEDURE FOR MEDIUM SIZE ENGINES SAE J 350 January 1980 SPARK ARRESTER TEST CARBON SAE J 997 January 1980 The above guidance is primarily for lift trucks in potentially flammable atmospheres, but can apply to various types of spark arrestors for vehicles. Obviuosly, the SAE test procedures may have been updated.
