Don't forget that a new set of regulations came into effect on the 1st of April 2002 on this subject. These are environmental but provide a good base to start.
Generally speaking the prime safety risks are fire and the existing guidance notes for HFL&LPG provide excellent advice on separation distances and the potential use of fire walls.

If you store above 15 litres of petrol you will need a licence. Contact the trading standards service department of the local authority. The rules are changing in August for licencing but the storage requirements will remain the same. They should provide an information pack regarding storage requirements. Also remember the fire risk assessment.
Good luck
