Posted By Calum Cameron Tech SP I am in the process of dealing with the issue of work on HV swith gear and apparatus. I was hoping that someone has a policy and a safe system of work that will cover the safe grounding and discharge of this equipment before a permit is issued as the conductors are capacitive in themselves and will hold a significant charge. If anyone has a copy of the above, I would be very gratefull if they could let me have a copy. Thanks very much in advance

Posted By Jane Blunt Dear Calum I suspect that this is not as simple as it sounds. Charge can normally be removed by earthing. The length of time that the earthing should remain in place depends on the mechanism that is charging the conductors. For example, if it is a cable with a dielectric, the dielectric can 'relax' over an extended period of time, recharging the cable unless the cable remains earthed. You may need to consult the person who designed the system, or similar system, or an electrician with proven competence in such a system. Jane

Posted By Robert K Lewis Calum I must endorse Jane. This is a complex operation and any system must be designed by a competent electrical person. Do NOT attempt this yourself otherwise you are probably working outside of your competency, I do not know your educational background etc. Your company, looking at your e-mail address, will have electrical specialist managers for this type of work and you must involve them. If they are not available you will need to contract this out to a specialist contractor. You do not say precisely what type of area this is in but there are a number of companies operating in this field.

Posted By Calum Cameron Tech SP Thanks for the response so far. I am an ex- electrical engineer and i am looking for a ready made base document so that i dont have to re-invent the wheel. The design of HV systems and thier subsequent operation is something that i am familier with so this issue is within my competency. I would be grateful to anyone who has a copy of such a document that i could have and adjust to suit my needs. Thanks again

Posted By George Wedgwood Calum, feel free to call me for a chat about such systems. I too am an electrical engineer and a specialist in such systems (former generation & supply company experience) and have developed some smaller safety systems for others. The basis is, of course, a permit system based on the HSE recommendations for (typically) the petro-chem industries but the key is good procedures like you mention that actually work in your environment, in conjunction with such a safe system. It is a bit too complicated to discuss over the Chat Page so feel free to email me on gaw@pgen.net or call 07836 718908. Regards, George Wedgwood CEng MIEE FIOSH
