Posted By Joel Benham Does anyone know of organisations that have developed competency frameworks linked to safety management systems? The idea being that each tier within an organisation (Direcor, Assistant Director, Manager, Supervisor, Employee, etc)would have the key competencies identified for the fulfilment of their specific health and safety roles... Many thnaks for your help with this. Joel Benham

Posted By Ian Waldram Yes, we had such a system in Mobil North Sea, before the merger with Exxon. The SHE management competences were described in a 4 x 4 matrix, as part of an overall approach to management competence in which SHE was one of 6 competence areas. The four areas of SHE competence were: how SHE legislation & enforcement works in UK; SHE Management System; accident/incident investigation; using SHE technology wihin the business. A paper/presentation at the 1997 IOSH Annual Conference summarised the system. I am aware of others who have devised similar arrangements, but not where details have been published.
