Posted By Hazel Harvey Anyone currently contemplating taking an NVQ award should be aware that there will be certain changes to their acceptance for IOSH membership from the introduction of the revised national standards on January 1st. The level 3 award becomes a level 3 in Health and Safety not as currently Occupational Health and Safety Practice. This means that it will no longer meet the academic requirements for the TechSP catefory of membership. The new qualification is for those who have an interest or responsibility for health and safety but who would not consider themselves Safety Practitioners. In this it is similar to the NEBOSH National General Certificate which is also, in its new revised form based on the national standards.Anyone undertaking the existing level 3 will be accepted as previously. The revised level 4 award in Occupational Health and Safety Practice will have 13 units as opposed to the current 10. This will continue to be recognised as meeting the 'academic' requirement for the MIOSH category of membership. However, it should be pointed out that the NVQ on its own does not guarantee IOSH membership and that other conditions which may be required by the Admissions Committee may be necessary. The level 5 award does not meet the core competence requirements for MIOSH and will not be accepted as the academic requirement. It is, however, a useful CPD activity for those already in the MIOSH category, and will be recognised within the scheme. If you are in any doubt about these qualifications please check with IOSH before committing yourself to the qualification.

Posted By Robert K Lewis It is the old story really. the new III is lower than the old but the new IV is the same as before. The V which didn't previously exist doesn't relate to anything previously known. The use of this as PD however will always be subject to whether or not there is a personal improvement involved. This inevitably leads to the thorny question of CPD points allocation for any unit or part thereof. It is important that everyone involved in the CPD programme recognises that a degree of professional judgement must be made as to which courses provide beneficial development. What may of value 2 points to one person may be only 1 point value to another. This area is one which continually taxes the CPD committee and there can be no hard and fast rules. The planned revisions to the CPD programme will provide perhaps more clarity, but individual judgement and integrity are the ultimate key to any CPD scheme.

Posted By Tony Birchall I'm confused now! What would you need, after January 2003, to apply for TechSP? Does this also infer Level 4?

Posted By Hazel Harvey Tony, The NEBOSH Diploma part 1 and other accredited qualifications (see list elsewhere on web-site) will still be accepted as meeting the academic requirement for TechSP. It is only the N or SVQ at level 3 which will not.

Posted By Tony Birchall Hazel, could you specify whether you still require three succesfully achieved modules (for TechSP)of the Nottingham Trent University Diploma in SHE Management which I personally recommend as a route to Corporate status alongside the option of Level 4. Everyone keeps specifying Nebosh, does this mean it is still the most popular route?
