I am trying to find information / advice regarding H&S in the 'Office at Home'. I have found information on 'Home Workers' but not guidance on when an employee sets up an office within their own home to assist them in their role within an organisation (with their companys approval). Does this then come under the companys own H&S guidelines or is the employee responsible for their own H&S within their home? Thanks in anticipation for any advice regarding this topic.

Z (sorry, don't know your first name)
There is some info on teleworking under the Technical Information Section of this site.
There is also an article in this months Safety and Health Practitioner on the subject.
Regards,
Nick

Hi Z
We have quite a few home workers. Generally we provide the necessary equipment (pc, chair desk, phone line etc) although sometimes employees use their own desk. I always get them to complete a VDU self assessment form and we have a booklet which outlines all the necessary information such as accident reporting, electrical safety and safety for visitors. Additionally, I have a risk assessment form for homeworkers which covers general safety. We ensure that their electrical equipment is tested regularly and that they have a formal system in place for keeping in contact with their manager (usually a daily e-mail or phone call). The HSE have an excellent free leaflet on homeworking.

The worker at home is covered by Health and Safety legislation in the same way as those in the workplace. A policy to cover the 'remote worker' is needed to cover a whole variety of factors which present themselves for workers in the home. The site www.hrzone.co.uk ran a similar feature some weeks ago and lots of policy tips were posted up.
