On a recent COSHH course whilst looking through the manufactureres safety data sheet under the R & S phrases they listed U phrases with things like "U-3 before use refer to the safety data sheet". i have looked through lots of info but cannot find info on U phrases.

Any ideas???

Following up from this I have been told by a manufacturer that these U phrases will be becoming the norm soon?

U safety phrases are a new one on me too. I'm guessing they stand for User (U) phrases as opposed to the Risk (R phrases and Safety (S)phrases.

The following url is a link to the Toxic Substances Bulletin (issue 50) which contains an explanation of these phrases (although the U phrase isn't mentioned). It also has other links and sources of information that may prove useful.

My feeling is that U phrases aren't legally required (yet) but suppliers have introduced them as an 'extra'.

Hope this helps,
