Posted By Charles New According to 'Fire safety and employers guide', it depends on the nature of the premises and the risk. It goes on to say that the length of the escape route from any occupied part of the workplace to the storey exit should not exceed.... where more than one route is provided; 25m - high fire risk area 32m - normal fire risk (sleeping) area 45m - normal fire risk area 60m - low fire risk area where only a single escape route is provided; 12m - high fire risk area 16m - normal fire risk (sleeping) area 18m - normal fire risk area (except production areas in factories). 25m - normal fire risk area (including production areas in factories) 45m - low fire risk area hope this helps

Posted By Ed Carter David, Charles is quite right in the high number of things the final figure is dependant on. But speaking generally, and for industrial premises the 2000 Regs give one escape route 25m more than one escape route 45m Ed

Posted By Ken Taylor The principle in operation here is that (as per Approved Document B to the Building Regulations) direct distance is to be taken as 2/3 travel distance when layout and fittings are unknown. Table 3 of B1 gives maximum distances for a range of types of premises for both single direction and more than one direction of travel. Generally for one direction these range from 9m for institutional, bedroms and places of special fire hazard through 18m for offices, shops, commercial, schools, recreation, etc to 25m for industrial and storage premises. It is also notable that BS5588 Part 11 may be used instead for new defined small workplaces. If still in doubt after reading the literature, a question to the local fire officer would be advisable!
