CAN ANY ONE TELL ME WHATS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A HEALTH AND SAFETY OFFICER/ADVISOR/MANAGER AND WHAT WOULD A COMPANY EXPECT FROM EACH ROLE.

In my experience the main difference is the pay!!
Seriously, although many of the roles overlap considerably generally the Health and Safety Manager has taken on the responsibility of compliance to the legislation whereas the Health and safety Advisor merely advises how to comply and the responsibilty lies with the General manager or Director (higher up the chain of command). Health and safety Officers complete a similar role as that of the advisor and is the primary contact for the workforce to relay problems to.
Many Health and Safety Advisors are actually carrying out management roles and remain underpaid and the reverse is often true of Health and Safety Managers.
An example: Health and Safety Advisor will state that all fire exits are to be kept clear at all times and will suggest an inspection scheme be set up to ensure this. Some one else organises and implements the scheme following the advice given. Whereas the Manager will carry on to organise and implement such a scheme and over see the scheme throughout.
Im sure other people will have their views on this.

Agreed with the pay bit,
It all depends on the Company and what their attitude to 'managing' all risks within the business are, or they want someone to ensure that the minimum is legal compliance and not much else.
'report to HR or FM Manager!' should be reportint to board and inflencing the decision making process.
Forget the Job Title its about responsibilities, Governance and importance of managing out risks, not just H&S risks but all risks and these are the companies which pay all their people well as they see this as very important.
Suggest that if any employer is only going to pay less than £25k for MIOSH,RSP then they are not taking it seriously. what does a fully qualified accountant ot legal sec get in a comany, nuff said!!
