I may be acquiring a couple of lab instuments with radioactive source one has a 555MBq Nickel-63 sealed source, the other a 5.92 GBq Tritium sealed source. I am trying to ascertain if they are exempt from registration. I have a copy of the exemption order but would appreciate a second opinion as the order is quite difficult to interpretate. Can anyone help.

Have you tried talking to the Environment Agency? Like HSE, they are both policeman and source of advice but I am sure that they will treat your request for help with the respect it deserves.

You have a number of possible sources (no pun intended) of possible help/advice:
1/ The manufacturers of the instruments (especially if the instruments are new);
2/ The previous owners of the instruments (if secondhand);
3/ Your radiation protection adviser (if you have one); and,
4/ As Paul has suggested, the Environment Agency who I am quite sure will be only too pleased to help. (Start off by contacting your local EA office and ask to speak to the Radioactive Substances team.)
You say that you 'may' be acquiring these instruments. It is probably worth finding out the maintenance/disposal costs of the kit before you get it as these may come as an unwelcome surprise!
Hope these comments help but please do not hesitate to email me if you would like to discuss the matter further.
