Posted By MICHELLE BROWN Can anyone tell me what European standards bump caps(baseball style) conform to? Surely they will not provide as much protection as a hard hat?

Posted By Sean Fraser Interesting question - a quick net search has revealed that American sites stress that bump caps should not be used where ANSI standards need to be applied, with this being the typical comment : "These caps do not meet ANSI Z89.1 requirements". However, I also found a site that stated their cap met "Standards EN812 -30ÂșC, 440V a.c., F" but this only refers to ventillation. It also noted that it wasn't compatible with other connecting items - an important point to consider should you need to employ additional PPE such as ear defenders. The site was http://www.stratfords.com/HEADWEAR/centurion.html. I have no connection or related interest to the company or products stated. There was no mention of compliance with EN397 so the assumption is that they generally do not. At the end of the day, if I had to wear a hard hat for my own personal safety then I would rather look like a live nerd than a trendy corpse!

Posted By Simon Dean Michelle Bump Caps should conform to EN812. Be aware that these do not offer protection from falling objects but only from bumping or scraping of the head. Hope this helps. Simon
