when assessing chemicals, do I assess them individually or when they are batched together to make something else. Is there a good programme that will help me do the assessments. I have been given three A4 lever arch files to work through and am feeling suicidal Jim

You assess them for the risks that they pose while you use them, and if that means that you react them together to form something else, then you assess the reaction process itself and the products and by-products, if they are hazardous. However, you have to be realistic in assessing how exposure is likely to occur, and how it should be controlled.
The COSHH essentials book, HSG193, is good here. It helps you to filter the risk phrases to make broad decisions about the importance of control and the level of control that is required. It helps to assess the likelihood of exposure, in various common scenarios. It has lots of worked examples of control measures.

- and don't forget the risks in storage. Whilst you cannot realistically plan for every possible chemical permutation from major damage, there is a need to separately store different categories of chemicals and provide safe and secure conditions as appropriate.
