Posted By Jane Blunt Dear Edel We don't have any specifics for first aid issues, because we host exams within our Department, and the senior technician in charge of the area would ensure that appropriate first aid was delivered. We have a highly automatic fire detection system, which has a history of several false alarms to every real one, and we do have a written procedure for disabling the fire sounders (but not the red strobe light) in the exam room. We have an emergency team of five people with pagers who spring into action to discover the source of the alarm and decide whether to go to full evacuation or not. An announcement is made to the candidates at the start, reassuring them that they should stay put for the time being, if the red light starts flashing, unless they can see the fire, and positive confirmation of the situation will be delivered to the invigilators asap. The exam room is on the ground floor and has its own double width fire exit straight to the outside. This all works fine on weekday exams, but is a little more strained when we have a paper on a Saturday. Jane
