Anyone know of any substitute for using Chromate paint primers for coating aluminium? We occasionaly brush paint approx 0.5m2 with a Zinc Potassium Chromate primer. I know it's a carcinogen, and have read HSE guidance etc, but my employer states that this is the only substance that gives the desired performance.

Inhalation of chromate spray can lead to lung and nasal cancer. As far as I am aware, there is no other cancer risk. If your process involves brush application of the primer, there should be no airborne chromate and so no cancer risk.
