Posted By Bill Elliott Your views please chums - does a Corgi registered fitter have any duties to ensure they maintain their own competence. I am aware of the employer duty but have come across an instance where the fitter is refusing "refresher" training to maintain competence, unless more dosh is forth coming!

Posted By Peter J Harvey Bill, A bit off the norm, but I look after the training and records for the gas maintenance operations that my employer carries out, it is somewhere there in the small print of my job discription. We employ 5 fitters who spend a great deal of time carrying out Landlord Safety Checks and gas maintenance word. As you will be aware they are required to re-qualify on a regular basis and the training and qualification is not easy and requires a great deal of knowledge and study, in fact since the change from ACOP's to the ACS qualification we have reduced from 12 to 5 fitters because the others could not "easily" retain the competence and achieve good training results. All of the fitters I know are normally requesting additional training and ongoing training and competence checks are part of CORGI registration, this should be picked up in the quality checks CORGI require and the job/task supervision that fitters must have. A few quality control/job inspections with some fault finding normally acts as great encouragement. Peter Harvey

Posted By Jim Sweetman Bill, Sounds like a nice little bit of blackmail! Both HASWA and MHSWR place a duty on an employee to co-operate. There are probably other more specific requirements under gas safety legislation. Sounds like a bit of non-compliance in this instance. If the chap doesn't maintain his competence, the employer is on a sticky wicket employing him in the competent role. Looks like a good case for HR with appropriate H&S support. Regards Jim Sweetman
