The common practice for monitoring the danger for an explosive atmospher is to monitor the concentration of the the factor that may cause an exlosion (eg - hydrogen ).
Yet how should one deal a situation where there are more then 1 factor - anqor some of them are not known?

Would have thought that when you do this you would have a rough idea of the likely or possible atmospheric contaminants which could be present in spaces which you are about to enter, eg Silos, sewers, tank cleaning, vessels pits etc.

So if its unknown then maybe you would need to do a bit more research, there are various companies advertised in the SHP who could give you some advice on this and the equpiment required or maybe a someone from TRANSCO would respond on this site?

If you monitor for explosive gas you shouldconsult the supplier of the monitoring equiopment. As far as I am aware monitors are calibrated for specific gases but will detect and alarm for similar one. We monitor for flammablr gas with the monitor calibrated to be accurate for methane but the monitor will alarm for all flammable vapours and gases
