Posted By David Fellows I am aware of a manager that has asked for lift trucks to be delivered without mirrors for reversing. This filled me with horror, his reasoning: Reliance on a mirror lead's to operators not looking behind. Tried a search using reversing and mirrors with no luck. Any comments/advice/legal pointers?

Posted By Gavin Gibson By that arguament we should remove seatbelts from cars as it obviously encourages dangerous driving and ban suncream from shops as it encourages people to sunbathe. The forklift was CE marked with the mirrors as standard - does this manager propose to remove other safety features? The issue is normally one of driver training and competence, and the use of a banksman if required. Not forgetting the seperation of vehicles and pedestrians.

Posted By Alistair Reid Regulation 28e of PUWER applies - where the drivers direct field of vision is inadequate to ensure safety then visibility aids or other suitable devices should be fitted.
Paragraph 370 of the ACOP states "the selection of these devices for use on mobile work equipment is a matter for risk assessment, taking account of the purposes for which the devices are provided and there ability to improve the driver visibility"
If the manufacturer has made the decission that mirrors are required as a standard fitment to comply with this requirement then it is a brave person that is willing to stand up in a court of law and justify his risk assessment that removes these items especially if the fork truck has reversed in to some poor individual

Posted By Robert K Lewis Don't forget though that manufacturers love to make some of the required mirrors available as extras - even though they are required to achieve the HSE target of seeing an object 1m high 1m behind.
