I have recently had some dealings with an asbestos removal contractor. His competetent health and safety advice is provided by a safety officer who uses the designations C.D.M., N.E.B.O.S.H. after his name. Does anyone know whether such designations are valid and what kind of qualifications/competencies they might indicate?

Call me a cynic but I'd be wary of these as these are acronyms for Construction Design & Management (usually followed by the word "Regulations" and National Examining Board in Occupational Safety and Health. Please accept my apologies if you already knew that, I don't mean to teach you to suck eggs.

They may also be qualifications, but they're not ones I've heard of.

I would be interested to hear if they really are H&S qualifications or if colleagues agree that your adviser is perhaps being a little economical with the truth!

Simon - for those of us young enough to remember - "Award yourself the CDM" referred to Cadburys Dairy Milk - maybe your guy has taken it literally!!!

Before we start being too harsh on him perhaps he means he has the NEBOSH Construction Certificate which as far as I am aware gives the post nominals MIIRSM only (if you join of course).

May not be anything more malicious than that.

The only designations that are approved by NEBOSH are Dip2OSH and DipSpEn for holders of the Full Nebosh Diploma at part 2 or its predecessor and the Environmental Specialist Diploma. The term NEBOSH on its own does not represent any form of recognised qualification. Holders of Dip2OSH are also likely to be Members of IOSH (MIOSH), if so this status can be checked by giving our Membership department a ring.

Simple,

Ask them to provide original copies of their certificates! If not no job!
