Posted By Nigel Hammond I am concerned about a recent case - 'heralded as a humanitarian vitory for common sense' by the Disability Rights Commission. Basically, a judge has rubbished the RCN guide because it calls for elimation of manual handling - except in extreme circumstances. Instead, he supported the HSE's Guide to Handling Home Care as more relevant to home care solutions. I have not seen a full transcript of the case - but it seems that if someone finds a hoist uncomfortable or undignified, then care workers should resort to manual lifting. Could this result in three persons with physical disabilities instead of the one client - if you include the injuries to the staff involved?!
