Posted By Colin Fenwick There are a number of Specialist Groups; Rail, Construction etc however the area of road transport and logistics is not covered. Transport and warehousing covers a vast section of work so there must be more than just me out there - my company employs 24000 people in this sector. Occupational road risk cuts across many sections of our membership and this is now coming under the HSE spotlight with the pressure groups like Brake leading the way. Time for IOSH to join the debate and take the initiative. If there is sufficient interest generated then the council will consider SG status. What is the feeling out there?

Posted By Steve Sedgwick Colin I totally agree with you on this, H&S in road transport does require more H&S attention that it currently receives for the level of risk that this industry operates in. We as practioners, and the HSE, tend to leave it to the transport industry and other enforcement agencies which predominantly concentrate on the road traffic safety side of things The HSE were supposed to direct extra effort into this last year but from my perception this was hardly detectable until recently, but I guess Colin would be a better judge of this. I have seen the questionnaires that the HSE have circulated to Hauliers earlier this year, and the approach that they are taking will affect us all. The questionnaire is asking the haulier (amongst other things) which of its customers (our organisations who contRact the haulier) is providing delivery plans for the drivers to follow. Delivery plans are developed from risk assessments that include loading, transport, and unloading at the customer’s premises. These explain to the drivers, where to be loaded, method of loading, responsibility for loading, responsibility for securing, address of customer, where to park to be off loaded, who to report to at the drop off point etc etc. So even those of us who contract our road haulage out still have a high degree of responsibility for the safe loading, transport, and unloading of our products. Although we are suggesting a Specialist Group for Road Transport / Logistics, we should not make the assumption that this is only of interest to people in that industry, it affects most business.
